Fueling Midlife: Your Path to Sustainable Wellness

Are You "Fortune Telling" Your Health?

Feb 15, 2026

We do a dangerous thing in healthcare. We look at a normal blood sugar reading and say, "I'm healthy."

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we call this Fortune Telling—predicting the future based on limited data.

This week, I dove into the work of Dr. Ben Bikman (Why We Get Sick) and Dr. Casey Means (Good Energy) to explain why Glucose is a liar. Glucose is the last thing to break. Your Insulin (the thief in the shadows) could be screaming for help for 10 years before your doctor notices a problem.

The Big Concepts:

  • Mitochondria are Batteries: You aren't "burned out." Your batteries are dead. Processed food gunk up the works. Real food charges the battery.
  • The Credit Card Analogy: Dr. Robert Lustig calls processed food "Industrial Consumable Substances." Think of it like a credit card. If you ate plastic, your body wouldn't know what to do with it. That’s what ultra-processed food is to your liver—a toxin, not fuel.
  • Epigenetics: Your dad might have had diabetes, but your DNA is not your destiny. Your habits turn those genes on or off. You have the power to break the cycle.

The Reality Check: I ended the week with a selfie from the "Mom Taxi." I rely on these principles not so I can look good in a swimsuit, but so I can stay awake in the bleachers during a hockey tournament. That’s the real "why."
