Fueling Midlife: Your Path to Sustainable Wellness

From Injury to Insulin Sensitivity

Mar 15, 2026

My first mile back (and why it matters for your mitochondria)

If you’ve been following my journey, you know that breaking my fibula back in October was a major "forced pause." For a Nurse Practitioner who thrives on movement and a hockey mom who is used to being on the go, sitting still was a mental and physical challenge.

But this week, the pavement met my sneakers again. I’m officially back to walking, and while I’m starting slow, my focus is laser-targeted on my mitochondria.

Why? Because muscle is what Dr. Ben Bikman calls "metabolic real estate." Think of your muscles as a "glucose sink." When you move, your muscles pull sugar out of your bloodstream to use as fuel, even without needing a massive surge of insulin. By rebuilding my strength after this injury, I’m not just getting "fit"—I’m expanding my body's capacity to handle energy.

Muscle is the secret to longevity. It’s the armor that protects us from metabolic syndrome. If you’ve been waiting for "the right time" to start, let this be your sign. You don’t need a marathon; you just need to start dripping movement into your day to keep that glucose sink open.

I’m Vanessa, and this is Wellness with an NP. Stack the wins.
